Εναλλακτικά θα μπορούσαν να χαρακτηριστούν ως ευρέως διαδεδομένες φήμες. Ωστόσο, δεν είναι απαραιτήτως δημιουργήματα της φαντασίας, καθώς αρκετοί μύθοι στηρίζονται σε πραγματικά γεγονότα.
